The Ultimate Ride is a feature length documentary film about
the history of the A scow. Dating back to the late 1800’s the A scow is the largest, fastest, and most powerful of all the scows. The
A scow has enjoyed a resurgence in competitive racing since it was retooled in
1979 and the class is now stronger than ever. Although the same basic size and
shape as the original 1890's boats, it has modern, sophisticated rigging and
gear needed to make this incredible boat perform and last for years. Clocked at
over 25 MPH, this "rocket ship" is not for the novices. It requires
practiced crew of 6 to handle this scow - the ultimate boat in scow racing -The
Ultimate Ride!
We started shooting in August 2004
and have covered every major regatta since that time. We literally have
hundreds of hours of live action shot and have been compiling archived footage
dating back to 1929. In addition to the sailing footage the film will feature interviews
with names such as Buddy and Harry Melges, Brian and John Porter, Bob and Robbie Evans, the Perrigo family,
Hermann Nunnemacher, names that are engraved on some of the oldest sailing
trophies in the country. Names that are synonymous with the A scows design and
evolution. Names that continue to win Regional, National and World Championships
in other classes.
Narrated by Gary Jobson, The Ultimate Ride will be a sailing movie like no other, soon the rest of the world will see how truly magnificent these racing
machines really are.
